Dr Steve Sonneveld

MBBS, MRCOG, FRANZCOG, Australian Society of Colposcopy, Australian Fertility Society

Known as a supportive Obstetrician and fertility specialist, Steve develops a rapport with his patients and is always available to answer questions.

Many of Steve’s fertility patients undergo IVF after being diagnosed with fertility issues including unexplained infertility, and he supports them with continuing to try for a natural pregnancy while also investigating the best possible advanced treatments for their needs.

Over the last 15 years he has also developed an interest in antenatal screening for genetic abnormalities, including chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis. He has carried out more than 2,000 procedures. He also offers non-invasive prenatal diagnosis and cystic fibrosis carrier screening.

Steve graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Melbourne University in 1978 and completed his residency at Austin Hospital in Melbourne. After deciding to specialise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, he completed further training while working at North-West Regional Hospital (NWGH) in Burnie and then spent five years in that field in the United Kingdom.

After returning to Tasmania in 1989, Steve was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG) in 1990 and joined TasIVF. He was inspired to take an interest in infertility while working with Dr Jon Hewitt in Liverpool Women’s Hospital (England) and Professor Joe Correy, the previous Clinical Director of TasIVF in Hobart. Previous mentors at TasIVF included Dr Rod Watkins and Dr Geoff Bradfield.
