Find out moreIf you’re assisting a friend or relative to and from Hobart Specialist Day Hospital for a procedure, you’ll need to know what to expect.
They will not be able to drive for at least 24 hours after surgery, and will need someone to look after them so they can rest. It is important you can accompany them home after their procedure and stay with them for a while – preferably overnight.
We will let you both know the expected discharge time on admission. We have a small comfortable waiting room at the day hospital reception area, or you can spend some time at the local shops or cafes. It’s a short walk to Courthouse Cafe (19 Collins Street) and the McDonalds Café (cnr Argyle & Melville Street), or you can walk about 5 mins toward Hobart city where there are many food outlets and cafes. Our recovery room staff will call you after the operation to confirm the anticipated discharge time.
After surgery, the patient will need to rest at home for the remainder of the day. Please stay with them to make sure they can. They should not plan to run errands or look after others on that day. If you have any concerns about their recovery after the procedure, please call their doctor immediately.
